At Clickability, we like to eat our own dog food. If we sell SaaS, we've got to live SaaS.
So what does that mean? It means that every one of our internal business applications is SaaS based. Yes, you read it right: HR, email, payroll, project management, performance tracking, and billing (to name a few) are provided by SaaS partners.
Now, while we live in the cloud, we don't have our head in the clouds. It just makes logical business sense for agile and modern corporations to conduct day-to-day business in the cloud. Here's why:
Rapid Innovation:
Face it, traditional on-premise upgrades suck. The model is broken and antiquated. You simply can't take advantage of the rapid pace of Web innovation. You're stuck in a slow 2 1/2 year-development-cycle hell, and then have to absorb the additional humiliation (and cost) of upgrade and integration fees.
Controlled and Predictable Costs:
The SaaS subscription model and transparent upfront costs are simply smart. You know what you pay now. You know what you'll pay in the future. Add to this the elimination of hardware overhead, R&D expense (SaaS companies do it for you), and costly consultants and integrators for each upgrade. You do the math.
SaaS is Green:
Most SaaS companies didn't go into business to help save the Earth, but that's exactly what they're doing. Compared to SaaS, the carbon footprint of an on-premise software installation is massive.
When your company works in the cloud, you immediately enjoy the benefits of a multi-tenant infrastructure (on demand scalability, state-of-the-art security, stringent SLAs, and sensible kilowatt hour usage that comes with economies of scale).
You can retire all those power sucking, inefficient, and old servers your company is now using. You can eliminate all those software boxes, CDs, shrink wrap, and the gasoline spent on shipping you all that waste in the first place.
Just imagine: As a modern SaaS enabled company, you could be running a more efficient and agile business while at the same time doing something good for the planet and future generations. (Learn more about "SaaS is Green").
But don't take my word for it. Check out Peter Laird's blog on Arch2Arch. Peter has put together a great guide on "cloud computing" as well as a visual map of the industry (full disclosure: you can find "Clickability" under "Content as a Service").
Dog food never tasted better.

would you describe Clickability as 'AJAX'y?

I think it makes sense for almost all situations. ZDNet blogger, Phil Wainewright, did an interesting blog that my provide further insights: http://blogs.zdnet.com/SAAS/?p=432

Is there anything that SaaS cannot do? Are there times when SaaS isn't a fit solution?

John, feel free to think of Clickability as AJAX-y. But know that we view AJAX as a means to an end, not the end itself. Where it enhances the user experience and enables a user to carry out a task more quickly you will find the Clickability Platform using AJAX.
